Four Players Withdraw From ATP Geneva Open

There is an outstanding entry list for the ATP Geneva Open, which starts next week.  Novak Djokovic surprisingly accepted a wild card into the event, which has generated much attention in the tennis world. 2022 French Open runner-up Casper Ruud and Ben Shelton are among the other to players set to compete at the tournament. However, four players have elected to withdraw from the Geneva Open. This article names those who have withdrawn and then lists their four replacements in the draw.

Which Players Have Withdrawn?

Tommy Paul was the first player to withdraw from the Geneva Open. This may be due to his efforts at the Italian Open, where he progressed to his first Masters 1000 semifinal on clay. Paul may not wanting to overplay before the start of the French Open on May 26th, particularly after recently returning from an injury.

Jiri Lehecka was the second player to withdraw from the Geneva Open. He sustained an injury in the first set of his Madrid Open semifinal against Felix Auger-Aliassime, which forced him to retire from the match. The Czech player now faces a race to be fit for the French Open. This makes his decision not to feature in Switzerland unsurprising.

Jordan Thompson also withdrew from the Geneva Open. The reasons for the Australian’s decision are not as clear. Thompson played at the Italian Open, losing in straight sets to Thiago Monteiro. He had no visible problems during that contest. The 30-year-old may just want to take a break and recharge ahead of the French Open.

Facundo Diaz Acosta was the final player to withdraw from the Geneva Open. Unfortunately, the Argentine has a serious collarbone injury. This means Diaz Acosta will also miss the French Open. It is not currently known when he is likely to return to the sport.

Who Replaces Those Four Players In The Draw?

Rinky Hijikata benefits from Paul electing to withdraw from the Geneva Open. He is yet to find form on clay this year, losing his last two matches on the dirt in straight sets. The 22-year-old now has a chance to change that at the ATP 250 tournament in Switzerland.

Yannick Hanfmann replaces Lehecka at the Geneva Open. The German has generally played his best tennis on clay throughout his career,  but his results have been somewhat mixed during the 2024 clay-court season. Nonetheless, Hanfmann will still be a dangerous player to draw for anyone in Geneva.

Alexander Shevchenko is also set to feature at the event after Thompson’s decision to withdraw. The hard-hitting 23-year-old is another player who has struggled on clay so far this year. He will seek to change his fortunes during the final week before the French Open.

Daniel Altmaier is the fourth player to enter the Geneva Open entry list. The German defeated Arthur Fils very impressively at the Madrid Open a few weeks ago. However, he has lost three consecutive matches since then. He now has an opportunity to address that slide.
